R originated from the statistical programming language S, which was developed by John Chambers while at Bell Labs in the 1970s. The first version of R was developed by Robert Gentlemen and Ross Ihaka at the University of Auckland in the mid-1990s. they wanted a better statistical software to use in their Macintosh teaching laboratory and decided to create their own. R is a GNU project.[11][12] The source code for the R software environment is written primarily in C, Fortran, and R.[13] R is freely available under the GNU General Public License, and pre-compiled binary versions are provided for various operating systems. R uses a command line interface; there are also several graphical front-ends for it.
